What Does Exempt Or Non-exempt Status Mean?

Salaried workers are exempt from many of the regulations regarding overtime pay and minimum wage requirements. Many employers misclassify their employees as exempt or as an independent contractor in order to require additional hours beyond the standard 40 hours per week. Before an employee may be classified as exempt status, the employer must show they meet specific administrative, supervisory or management criteria.
